I just finished the last block of a five plate woodblock print of Ginger Schweikert in a pair of high heels and pantyhose. I recently was informed that the Columbia Art League is having a show this coming July called, “Bare”, which will show works from various artists which address the nude figure. I have made a couple of paintings recently which feature this subject matter and thought I would make a woodblock print of a similar image. I found a slide I had of Ginger from approximately 30 years ago when she used to model for me. I decided to use that slide as a reference to create the image in this print called, “Pantyhose”. (See Woodblock Prints.) It turned out quite well and reinforced the fact that I really enjoy portraying the nude female figure in several different mediums. This print is rather large compared to what I have been doing recently. It measures 12 inches by 24 inches. It is also printed in all the colors in the color wheel and printed on several different colors of paper. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun.
Making woodcut prints is an arduous process but I find it quite enjoyable. I get myself situated in my little workshop with my tools, blocks of Birch plywood, paper and ink and get to work. Jazz makes for a great background which I listen to on KJLU out of Jefferson City, MO. Happy, happy.
As often times happens when we as artists prepare for a particular show and make something specific to that call, not all of the work I submitted was accepted by the Columbia Art League. I found out that one of the judges was a former faculty member in the Art Department at MU and didn’t like my work now any more than she had when I was studying in her department. Too bad.
I was able to get a couple of things in the show that didn’t reveal quite as many naughty bits but the work I had specufically created for that venue was not accepted. No surprises, really. Why expect something different from people who don’t get you in the first place? No harm no foul but still, kind of dissapointing.
